The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

I had no idea what to anticipate when I picked up The Name of the Rose. I was quickly drawn into its peculiar, atmospheric world. The narrative is set in a massive, ancient monastery in fourteenth-century Italy. Adso, a young novice who narrates the tale, and Brother William, a perceptive and intelligent monk, are the primary characters. They have come to the abbey because a few monks have died in mysterious and unsettling ways. The abbey itself immediately struck me as a character, with its dark, secret passageways and enormous library that seemed to come to life.

The plot is more than just a traditional murder mystery. Adso learns alongside William as he uses his keen intellect and love of inquiry to uncover the truth. The book's focus on why people are so terrified of new information, rather than just identifying the perpetrator, caught my attention. The monastery is tense because some monks are afraid that certain books or ideas will destroy everything. The story had a lot of weight because of this conflict between wanting to know the truth and wanting to keep it hidden. The fact that William is inquisitive even when others are scared and doesn't stop researching even when someone wants to silence him makes his character seem admirable.

I thought about my own learning after reading this. I'm hesitant to ask questions sometimes, especially if they contradict the opinions of others. However, as I followed William and Adso, I came to understand the value of independent thought. The book got me thinking about life, school, and the rules we follow. Some of them make sense, but others are in place only because people are afraid of change. The fact that someone as intelligent as William could pursue answers even in the face of danger thrilled and reassured me.

A Quote that I have learnt from the novel is that "Sometimes searching for the truth means fighting through silence and fear, but it's always worth it".
