The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco I had no idea what to anticipate when I picked up The Name of the Rose. I was quickly drawn into its peculiar, atmospheric world. The narrative is set in a massive, ancient monastery in fourteenth-century Italy. Adso, a young novice who narrates the tale, and Brother William, a perceptive and intelligent monk, are the primary characters. They have come to the abbey because a few monks have died in mysterious and unsettling ways. The abbey itself immediately struck me as a character, with its dark, secret passageways and enormous library that seemed to come to life. The plot is more than just a traditional murder mystery.
